The author tried to outline some principal ways for creating the indices of sustainability of social and economic development of rural areas taking into account the modern trends of science development, EU countries experience and the background of theory and practice of sustainable development in Ukraine. Methods proposed by the author can be used at macro, meso and micro levels.
