Efficiency of Commercial Banks as a factor of sustainable development of regions. Ukrainian example

Abstract:
To understand the state and progress of the commercial banks of Ukraine and for assessment of the perspectives of sustainable development of financial sector the examination of the profit efficiency of Ukrainian commercial banks during 2003-2007 was performed. The most efficient were the large banks (1 and 2 group for assets), offering a variety of services for enterprises and individuals. The banks with foreign capital demonstrated rapid growth of efficiency. The regional disparities showed to be the significant factors of inefficiency. At the one hand - the developed branch of departments and covering more areas is positive for bank's results, but the highest efficiency scores have the banks, which are specialized at one or several regions. So the problem of searching the optimal scale of activities in the context of low capital supplementation is important for Ukrainian banking sector.
