Productivity changes of agricultural sector in Slovakia
Anotácia:
Abstract:
Measuring productivity of agricultural enterprises is an item of great interest of many authors. To estimate the performance and productivity change, we have used an output oriented DEA model using Malmquist productivity index. This allowed us to use the panel data of 91 agricultural farms to estimate changes in total factor productivity over the period 1997-2005. Data for inputs and output we obtained from the financial statements of the firms selected by random choice. One output variable - total production and three input variables - consumption, labor costs and capital employed were chosen. On average, TFP increased by 0.07 percent from 1997 to 2005. Source of TFP growth was mainly due to technical progress. This result reveals that the economy was able to cause shifts in their own frontier due to innovation. However, index growth of only 1.007 reflects that level of technology in the economy is still moderate.
